 Some Suggestions on Website Redesign

Many webmasters redesign their websites for a better and more professional looking and many webmasters redesign their websites for a better SERP. No matter what the reason is, we should consider carefully before website redesign.

In this article, Id like to give you some suggestions on website redesign.

Don't Redesign Website unless You Have to Do that

As the saying goes, if its not broken, dont fix it. The same is true for website redesign. Here, I can tell you a true story of my friend. He redesign his website just for a better looking but the result is that the traffic of his website become lower after redesigning the website especially the organic traffic (From 2000 visitors per day to 1300 visitors per day). And the page rank of his website (homepage) changed from 4 to 3 after redesigning his website for some time. Therefore, wed better not redesign website unless we have to do that.

Dont Change the URLs of Your Website

If you have decided to redesign your website or have to redesign your website, please dont change the URLs of your website.

For example, if the product page of your website is http://www.slicemaker.com/product_view_2.htm and you have done many SEO works for this page, so the page has a good rank in SERP. However, if you changed the URL of your product page to another URL like http://www.slicemaker.com/buy_2.htm, your product page will be considered as a new page and search engines like Google may think that your old product page has gone or disappeared. The worst result is the traffic is gone and your efforts are in vain.

Dont Add New Contents too Fast

Creating high quality and unique contents for our website is what we advocate. However, adding new contents too fast is not suitable for SEO especially for a small business website. Adding contents regularly and naturally will surely help your website get a higher rank in SERP.

Dont Optimize Your Website too Fast

SEO is a long-term job so we should be patient. Please dont optimize your website too fast, otherwise your website will be suspicious. Some webmasters redesign their website just because they find some good keywords and want to change some pages title, keywords and description tags. Actually, you will get bad result if you change the title, keywords and description tags randomly.

 301 Redirect

If you have to redesign website by changing the URLs of your website, it is necessary for you to use a server-side 301 redirect.

.

301 redirects are particularly useful in the following circumstances:

1. You've moved your site to a new domain, and you want to make the transition as seamless as possible.
2. People access your site through several different URLs. If, for example, your home page can be reached in multiple ways - for instance, slicemaker.com, www.example.com , or http://www.slicemaker.com - it's a good idea to pick one of those URLs as your preferred (canonical) destination, and use 301 redirects to send traffic from the other URLs to your preferred URL. You can also use Webmaster Tools to set your preferred domain.
3. You're merging two websites and want to make sure that links to outdated URLs are redirected to the correct pages.

Summary: It is not an easy job to redesign website, we should really take it seriously.
