XML Sitemap vs. HTML SiteMap - Which One to Choose?

One of the most common questions asked by webmasters especially by junior webmasters is that which sitemap they should choose - XML sitemap, HTML sitemap or both?

If you are also troubled by this question, the below article may help you a lot.

Differences between XML Sitemap and HTML Sitemap

To help you know which sitemap you should choose, it is good for you to know the differences between XML sitemap and HTML sitemap.

HTML sitemap is well known by people especially by those people who are not engaged in internet marketing. This kind of sitemap is mainly used to help visitors of a website to find what they need conveniently or help the visitors clearly know the structure of a website.

XML sitemap is mainly used by webmasters to help search engines spiders to crawl their websites effectively. Most search engine spiders are trained to look for and identify if an XML based sitemap exists on a website. A good and comprehensive XML sitemap will surely help your website be indexed by search engines like Google more effectively.

Do We Need a HTML Sitemap?

In my personal opinion, I think it is necessary for us to create a HTML sitemap for our website. Why? There are two reasons that I think can help us understand why need this kind of sitemap.

1. Although HTML sitemap is mainly used to help visitors (real human beings), it also can help search engines spiders to crawl your website. So, if you want to have a better SERP, it is necessary for you to create a HTML sitemap for your website.

2. And, HTML sitemap will surely help your visitors find the information they need conveniently, it is friendly to visitors - Webmasters GOD! So, there is no reason we should not use HTML sitemap.

Do We Need a XML Sitemap?

In my personal opinion, I think XML sitemap is less important than HTML sitemap. If your website has good structure, have unique and useful contents and updates regularly, search engines spiders will also like your website and will index your web pages well.

However, for a new website, I think it is still necessary to create a XML sitemap. It will help search engines know your website faster. And, if you have a website that is old enough but have a few contents indexed by search engines, I think it is still necessary for you to create a XML sitemap for your website and then submit the sitemap to search engines.

Summary on XML Sitemap vs. HTML SiteMap

I think most websites should create HTML sitemap since it is good for both your visitors and search engines spiders. If you have enough time, a XML sitemap is also recommended especially if you are a new webmaster or your website is not well indexed by search engines.

At last, I hope all of you will be successful in the fields of internet marketing.
